Gower Peninsula Farmhouse Conversion – After looking for a suitable builder to handle what was a substantial conversion of a run-down two-storey Gower farmhouse to a modern three-storey (plus extensions) property, I spent months speaking with various local builders, all of whom said they could carry out the work involved, but unfortunately none could convince me that they fully understood the structural engineering concerns I had, concerns that would have a direct effect on the safety of everyone involved in the project, let alone budget cost and completion schedules. I was then informed by a friend that there was a company carrying out a large conversion project in a neighbouring Gower village, so I visited the site and spoke with the site manager, who was also the building company owner, Mr. Eugene O’Kelly, and arranged to meet with him at my property a few days later. During his visit to assess my project, I was encouraged that Mr. O’Kelly quickly noticed that structural engineering calculations, as well as possible review of the design, were needed to properly understand and quote for the work, which immediately increased my confidence that the project was being viewed by a professional builder, and after going through the recommended structural engineering review plus a few days of discussion around finishes, price, and completion dates, I agree to put the project into Mr. O’Kelly’s hands. Without going into the fine details of the job (see photographs on AbcWales website for that), the contract ran very smoothly, and the problems that inevitably rise when you tear apart an old farmhouse were handled quickly and professionally. Over a period of ten months, the property was completely transformed, at which point I decided to add some additional internal work to the ground floor to the previously-agreed contract, all of which was completed to the same high standards as the rest of the work carried out, and the completed project finishing more or less on time and budget, with all work being passed off in stages by the local council building departments as and when necessary. Since completion of this contract, I have been involved with the purchase and subsequent sale of various renovation building projects, and have involved Eugene O’Kelly wherever possible, even if it only to ask for advice, as his input is highly valued. At the time of writing he and his team are close to completion on an extensive conversion of a high value property I own. I cannot recommend him highly enough!
